The SPCA Cincinnati takes in more than 100 animals rescued from Hurricane Ida
More than 100 animals, including dogs, cats, and rabbits, arrived at the SPCA Cincinnati on September 1, 2021,after being rescued from shelters in the hurricane-ravaged New Orleans area.
The SPCA Cincinnati is partnering with Brandywine Valley SPCA to rescue the animals across state lines. Brandywine Valley SPCA, which has facilities in several states, mobilized its teams earlier this week to move the animals. The animals being relocated were already in New Orleans area shelters before the storm hit. By removing the animals from the storm area, local shelters will then have space for any local pets displaced by the storm.
“We are always at the ready, with the capability to help these animals affected by Hurricane Ida. Our staff prepared to receive them and are giving them the care they needed upon arrival,” said Mike Retzlaff, SPCA Cincinnati'sInterim President & CEO. “Working in partnership with other shelters saves lives and makes a difference at every level of animal welfare.”
The animals were flown from the New Orleans area by Wings of Rescue, a non-profit flight service which, among other things, flies at-risk shelter pets from disaster areas. The flight is sponsored by Petco Love.
The animals are currently being evaluated and, if necessary, will receive veterinary treatment by the SPCA Cincinnati medical staff. When the animals are available for adoption, announcements will be made on our Facebook page as well as at spcacincinnati.org.
